THE FIRST-EVER INSIDE LOOK AT THE AGENTS WHO REMOVE BAD GUYS FROM AMERICA! * * * * * * * "Excellent... In over 28 years as a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, Immigration Inspector, and then Deportation Officer, I amassed a great number of stories worth telling, but none better than those you'll find within the covers of this book. [The author] has selected several true life events and woven them into one enjoyable read; one to be discussed everywhere from the water cooler to the classroom." -- Craig S. Robinson, former Field Office Director, New Orleans * * * * * * * This year, when the administration announced a new immigration enforcement strategy that shifted the focus onto dangerous aliens with criminal records, there were cheers from both sides of the immigration debate. Deporting violent felons who prey on innocent victims (including many victims in the immigrant communities) was one policy America could agree on, and the assignment went straight to the fugitive teams of the U.S. Deportation Officers, a mysterious, elite corps suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Deportation Officers possess remarkable power. Most cops throw criminals in jail; Deportation Officers throw criminals out of the country. As the singular agents empowered to remove personae non gratae from the United States, theirs would appear to be straightforward mission Find the foreign bad guys and expel them. Indeed, that is the plot of this book. But, as this book reveals, there are a lot of twists in the line, and what appears simple is anything but. * * * * * * * Part literary thriller, part (way-off-the-main-drag) New Orleans ride-along, part exposé, and all entertaining, this is America's immigration war as you've never seen it before!

This is a mindblowing masterpiece. I have never rated another book 5 stars until THE DEPORTATION OFFICER HANDBOOK. You can check all my other reviews.
I am crazy about this book. On display here is the evolution of literature, this is what great books will be like in the future.
First of all, don't let the title fool you. The handbook label is tongue in cheek. In fact, the stories convinced me that Deportation Officer is the last job I ever want to do as long as I live. From the sounds of it, I wouldn't survive. And for anyone afraid that this is some anti-immigrant tome, forget it. The nationalities and races of the heroes and the villains run the spectrum.
But let's talk about what this book really is, and that's a thriller doubling as a New Orleans love letter. I AM New Orleanian, so Claiborne Tchoupitoulas was going to have to do it right if he was going to get my approval... And he totally nailed it!
The writing kicks the door in early, with the description of Rayford recruiting the narrator for the job in a New Orleans hip-hop saloon. That short chapter amazingly captures the flavor of the city, the New Orleans air, and the reason people in New Orleans act the way they do. And it goes down as the best description of a New Orleans bar on record. Don't believe me? Click on the "Look Inside" feature on this Amazon site and where it says "Search Inside This Book," type in "dream job" and it will take you right to page 7 where that bar scene begins. If anybody can show me a better New Orleans bar portrait than that, I'll buy the bar.
And the book just keeps getting better from there, with nonstop clever twists, right up to the dynamite end.
I really think this is the evolution of literature, there's simply no comparable reading experience. Early on the narrator explains how Rayford communicates on multiple levels at once, and that's a good way to describe this masterpiece: it's a thriller that makes you turn pages like crazy, it has sexcapades worthy of Tucker Max, the gonzo factor is up there with Hunter S. Thompson, and it makes you laugh as hard as Confederacy of Dunces. I submit the chapters "Your Relationship with Informants Should Be Friendly but Businesslike" and "Whoever Talks First Loses" as high-water marks in literary comedy.
Everything in this whole book is modern and fresh. I can't think of another book where we haven't seen a single scene before. The virgin topic of deporting violent criminals helps, but it's deeper than that. Every character in this universe is brand new through and through, starting with the most unpredictable narrator I've ever discovered.
Wow! Claiborne Tchoupitoulas swings for the fences, and he hits this one right on. THE DEPORTATION OFFICER HANDBOOK is quotable, contemporary, and indelible. It gets no fresher or better than this.
If you are squeamish about violence and absurd sexual situations, steer clear. For everyone else, my advice is buy the book and take the ride.

The Deportation Officer Handbook Claiborne Tchoupitoulas 9781450564250 Books Reviews

I'm a middle school teacher. I'm not about to slide into a new career in the high adrenaline/high danger world of a deportation officer. However, this debut by author/department of Homeland Security insider Claiborne Tchoupitoulas gave me a glimpse, a vivid, street level view of that world, and I loved every roller coaster twist and turn.

Each chapter is headed by a commandment for success (and for staying alive) as a Deportation Officer. Ostensibly a primer for future officers, it will undoubtedly draw many into that fold and most likely also scare many away. The life these officers lead, as they protect your (and my) way of life, is thrilling, fraught with danger and frustration.

Tchoupitoulas never lets us forget that this work of fiction represents the very real lives of those officers who protect us. They fight to purge the streets of (illegal) alien felons, among them murderers, rapists, sex traffickers of children and more. The system of removal does not always work as planned, because most countries of origin don't want their criminals back and because we have some incredibly inept politicians and bureaucrats in charge. It takes scheming and great cunning for the officers in this story to deport these menaces to society.

I'm always on the lookout for an author who can make me laugh, and even with this serious subject, Tchoupitoulas managed on many occasions to elicit a belly laugh from me. Deftly. His choice of comic words and imagery, as well as his dead-on depiction of the sights, sounds and smells of New Orleans, reminds me of the late John Kennedy Toole's work, "A Confederacy of Dunces." As with "Confederacy," there is a dark side to the story, and it takes a huge talent to inject such a serious subject with some accidentally-spit-your-Crown and Coke-all-over-the-pages humor.

It is very easy to picture this work as an action movie, a la Training Day. The dynamic between the narrator Derek Black and his mentor, Rayford Purvis, is very real, very exciting and often hilarious. This is a page turner that will keep you on edge and guessing until the end. I won't spoil the surprises for you.

Note- This is neither a left wing or right wing book. No immigrant hating in here. Just the opposite, in fact. You will see that the melting pot that is New Orleans is made richer by its conglomeration of cultures.

One more note- This book is not for the squeamish. There is sex, violence and some very foul language. The author is a master of the irreverent. I love that stuff, but it may not be the book to buy for your sweet grandmother. I'm just saying.

A tremendous first effort. I am eagerly awaiting more from Claiborne Tchoupitoulas.
