He looks forward to letters from her, but they are few and far between. When they do arrive, they are cold and factual.In contrast, the letters he receives from the service are warm and descriptive, and leave him wanting to know more. He can smell the woods this letter-writer tells him of, and the scent of tobacco. His curiosity is piqued and he tries to find out more about the person who writes these letters.
I cannot tell you more because I don't want to ruin the story for you, but the scene where he shows the letters to his doctor and the part where he meets his letter-writer are charming. I loved every page of this book.

In these modern times, lonely men can either call 1-900 numbers or get online to talk to Hot Asian Chicks. But in 1910 options were limited.
Carl Stanton is bedridden with rheumatism and suffering through the cold Boston winter, while his fiancee, Cornelia, has tripped on down to the warmer climes of the South and barely has time to send him a "Wish You Were Here" postcard. Pathetically desperate for human contact with the outside world, Carl signs up with "The Serial Letter Company" and starts receiving made up love letters from "Molly", who ends up caring more about Carl than the real people in his life. As the endless weeks go by, it's the daily letters and packages from "Molly" that keep Carl going rather than the spotty correspondence from the woman he loves.
As to be expected, Carl comes to want to know who "Molly" really is. Maybe "Molly" is a lonely old spinister grasping for the facade of romance. Maybe "Molly" is actually a man, a writer having to concoct these fake love letters in order to pay the bills. "Molly" may even be, *gasp*, a "Cullud Pusson".
Okay, I'm going to spoil it for you a little bit and tell you she's not. But wouldn't it have been more interesting, especially for 1910, if "Molly" HAD been one of these choices? Just something to think about.
BTW, this review is probably as long as the book itself.
I found a 1910 copy of Molly Make Believe in saved family possessions and enjoyed the book all over again as I carefully read the fragile pages. It was a delightful story and now I will enjoy the electronic version to enjoy reading it without endangering the fragile yellowing pages. I want to thank those people who translated it into the electronic version.
Unique story.
I love this book. Sweet and romantic, it does not have a bunch of dirt in it. I found it restful in a time when it's so hard to find something clean to read.
This is a book I read from my grandmother's bookshelf in the 1950s, a cute and funny romance with a wry tone which I've always loved. One caution even as a 1950s child I was shaken by one brief aside which reflects the racial prejudices so taken for granted at the time the book was written that this graceful author must not have thought twice about including it. Apart from that (instructive) shock, the book is a joy --- by today's standards we might call it melodramatic, but then, it's a melodramatic joy.
I stumbled onto this book by chance, and gobbled it up in one delighted afternoon. Could it really be so funny? So unabashedly sweet? I kept reading, waiting for the bottom to drop out from under the glorious little lark I appeared to have on my hands, but it never did. I loved every minute of it! This is a wonderful, imaginative, romantic book. Short and dear, not one to be missed!
This book was very fun and I enjoyed it immensely. Molly (although perhaps just make-believe) in particular is quite delightful. If you are looking for a fun, lighthearted romance with clever writing I highly recommend this one.
There were a few minor parts that were confusing to me, a modern reader, that probably would have made sense to those who lived during the time period it was written, but they were few and did not make so didn't enjoy it any less than I did. There were also a couple references that would not be quite politically correct that I chose to overlook, understanding that it was a different time and world back then.
