Author, James Dillehay would have one day run his family's successful business. A sufi teacher appeared in his life advising him to leave it. This is his story about how he traded fortune and security for the unknown, escaped financial ruin, overcame a terrifying fear, and discovered an extraordinary inner source of strength and transformation.
This sufi book of a student's experiences describes powerful forces within us all that battle for ultimate control of our destiny. While Spirit brings love, fulfillment, and success, its enemy, an animalistic force called the negative self, ruins happiness and achievement through seven devils of destruction. Master them and they unite to become a genie from a magic lamp who serves you.

Overcoming the 7 Devils That Ruin Success A Sufi Book of a Student Experiences edition by James Dillehay Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
As someone who toils over the many crossroads I've encountered in my professional career, this book really spoke to me. The author's personal story was inspiring and comforting. His viewpoint on the spiritual forces that determine our destiny is brilliant and engaging. Highly recommended!
James Dillehay became interested in the a group called the Sufi in High School. He found that a Sufi had invented Algebra and that Sufis had made other extraordinary discoveries. He found that the Sufi had contributed great achievements to our world that were the result of a heightened state of awareness and of perception. He discovered that to the Sufi these achievements were the results of the intertwining and cultivation of these two heightened processes and he set out to learn how to best imitate this group of highly accomplished and happy human beings.
This book is a guide of what he learned on this voyage to learn more about and behave more like the Sufi. In "Overcoming the 7 Devils That Ruin Success", he generously shares with us the teaching that led him to a place of greater productivity and happiness.
On page 10 of the first chapter there are a set of questions that guide the teachings and I found these questions to be instructive in several ways. As you work through the seven devils you can refer back to these questions to determine what in particular is causing you to stumble on your path to a more productive, fulfilling and happy life.
My only complaint is that we do not get a more thorough history of the Sufi. I would have loved to have more information about this group. This is a minor complaint as overall the book has great insight and it is written in an engaging and conversational style that makes you feel as though you are in the hands of a master teacher.
more pamphlet than book, not worth reading. Doesn't share anything other than authors anecdotes about why he is a success at selling empty words
I was confused about the title at first. What could a Sufi teach about success. But it turns out the Sufi lessons make a lot of sense. Give this book a try. Very interesting.
The premise of this book is that there are certain things within our lives that hold us back from being happy or fulfilled. Al of these setbacks are self-inflicted. This book explores the main ones guilt, vanity, worried about schedules, etc. and explains how you can overcome them. This is a good basic book and worth reading if you feel that life is just not going the way you want it to.
It's interesting to hear how things seemed to work out just in time, like in the chapter where the author discusses how he passed up a chance to take over his father's company, right before the industry went sour. I have had some similar things happen when I needed them to. This book will tell you about what's keeping you from what you should be doing. It's a nagging feeling you have inside that seems to not go away, and gets stronger the longer you ignore it. Very powerful message here. Good book.
Part personal story, part philosophy, and part motivation, this book covers the "devils" that hurt us in our life. No, not real devils like Asmodeus or the ones you find in a horror movie, but things like guilt, fear of change, vanity, impatience, habit and the clock. I was impressed, learned new things. I was afraid the vanity chapter would be some altruistic nonsense but it turns out that it matches my views 100%. Self-love isn't vanity, saying a product is good because it serves a purpose isn't the same as saying "a product is good because I invented it." I admire the author for leaving jobs he didn't like, sometimes quitting takes more courage than staying. Anyone can work a job until he gets fired or laid off, few have the courage to say "I don't like this, it's not working out, let me try something else."
