Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens edition by G K Gilbert Keith Chesterton Reference eBooks

Chesterton writes some most telling statements about Dickens. I think his most interesting one is his analysis of The Old Curiosity Shop. I share his feeling about Dick S. and the Marchioness: "...these two sane, strong, living and lovable human beings are the only two, or almost the only two, people in the story who do not run after Little Nell..." However, some of his other impressions of beloved Dickens classics, do not resonate with me. I would love for him to speak more of the "strong, living, and lovable characters," in those books. However, this book will be enjoyed by Dickens and Chesterton fans.

Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens edition by G K Gilbert Keith Chesterton Reference eBooks Reviews

Mr. Chesterton's book is an excellent addition to the available information and point of view on the works of Charles Dickens. I am glad to have it.
Recently I read two Dickens novels (Our Mutual Friend and Little Dorrit) and enjoyed them greatly. I though I would read something by some literary scholar commenting on Dickens, generally. So I got this book, but did not read much of it. Chesterton has an odd writing style that does not help my comprehension or enjoyment of this thoughts. I thought he would have some sophisticated and deep observations about Dickens and his writing style, but very few were to be found. Rather than reflecting some comments that might shed light on Dickens even today, his comments were merely the usual comparisons that any reviewer might offer of an author then living and writing. So this book did not offer the far-seeing wisdom that Dickens deserves.
How can you beat "free"? and Chesterton is always a pleasure to read if a bigot.
Wow! G.K. Chesterton has unbelievable insight into what makes humans tick. He does a great job discussing Dickens as a man and author, as well as Dicken's works. If you're a Dickens fan, this is well worth reading.
A gift well received
Charles Dickens is a great author. G. K. Chesterton is a great author. Both are masters of the language and analyzes situations and people in unforgettable ways. The one commenting upon the other is great literature in itself. Chesterton on Dickens gives great pleasure to read as well as luminous insight to Dickens as literature, the Victorian era, and literary criticism as it should be.
I bought this because I had just read Dombey and Son, and wished to see what Chesterton thought of it. Interesting discussion and interesting to see which novels he considers great and which he feels do not succeed. He looks at plot, characterisation and context and makes some extremely funny and witty comments. As only he can.
